Violence and injuries are the second leading cause of death and lost disability-adjusted life years in South Africa. The overall injury death rate of 8 per population is nearly twice the global average, and the rate of homicide of women by intimate partners is six times the global average. Gender-based violence (GBV) or violence against women and girls (VAWG), is a global pandemic that affects 1 in 3 women in their lifetime. The numbers are staggering: 35% of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence.
